Call for papers:

The initiative of the study days dedicated to the history of female musicians, now in its ninth edition, saw the light in 2015 due to the need to arouse awareness of and re-evaluate the female identity of a social, cultural and artistic nature often forgotten by European musical historiography. The ban on performing in public after marriage, the preclusion from musical positions and careers, the lack of public institutions that permitted the creation of educational pathways for women equal to those of the other sex, have all conditioned the development of female musical art and sometimes even leading to its obsolescence though many women were protagonists, authoritative professionals and attentive witnesses of the musical society of their time. This legacy, which determined the cancellation of an important artistic legacy from the collective memory, and come down to the present day, can be reversed only thanks to a thorough knowledge of the female contribution to the music of the past and present.

Female Ensembles and Orchestras from the Renaissance to the Present Day.

The topic proposed this year is one that modern studies on music and gender have dealt with very little, because they have focused mainly on the figures of individual female musicians. We would, therefore, like to undertake a more in-depth investigation of the collective dimension of women's musical work, in order to draw up a detailed historical, contemporary framework.

The papers may concern female musical groups within different historical and social contexts: from courts to monasteries, hospitals to public venues, in both cultured and popular settings.

Among the many formations, we shall consider chamber ensembles, choral groups, orchestras, jazz and popular music groups, both professional and amateur.

The papers shall contain:

  • A title;
  • an abstract of a maximum length of 30 lines, summarizing the contents of the paper, a short bibliography, the objectives of the research;
  • a short curriculum (max. 15 lines);
  • the list of any technical equipment required for the presentation;
  • your contact details (email, telephone, postal address).
  • presentations shall not last more than 20 minutes, corresponding to a text of approximately 16,000 characters.

The proposals must be sent, no later than  the e 10th of February, 2025 to:
